Homing Pigeon Wing Injury: Patient 22-872
This beautiful pigeon arrived at the wildlife center like many banded homing pigeons do. She was found on the ground unable to fly with an old wing injury and overall in poor shape. Although, not our usual wild animal, we have a soft spot in our hearts for homing pigeons, and most other rescues (both wild and domestic) do not take them in. If we have the space and time we cannot say no to an animal in need!
A Long Way From Home
Nicknamed "Kermit" by our team because of her striking green color, we were able to read the pigeon's leg bands to determine that she originally came from a loft in New Jersey! We contacted Kermit's owners but didn't expect much. For many of the homing pigeons we rescued over the years, we have either never heard back from their owners, or they told us they didn't want their birds back.
To our surprise, Kermit's family contacted us right away! They sent a prepaid safe mailing box to overnight Kermit back home to New Jersey. This photo is from her back in her cozy loft at home. We are so grateful for Kermit's caring family and the rescuers here in PA that noticed she needed help. A happy ending all around!
