Young Groundhog Washed Out of Den in Storm: Patient 23-1103

Some of our patients spend several months in our care. Others, like patient 23-1103, only need a few days.

Washed Away

Patient 23-1103 was a young female Groundhog. She was found cold and unresponsive outside of an orthodonist’s office in Mechanicsburg. One of the employees at the orthodontist noticed her out in the rain, and called for help. Upon her arrival at our center, we examined her and found that she was cold, soggy, and dehydrated--she was likely washed out of her den by heavy rain!

We offered her warmth, water, and food to help her regain her strength; our hope was to return her to her den once she had recovered, since Groundhogs remain in their family groups until Fall. Her time with us was short, and after just a few days she perked right back up! This little gal was released back where she was found and sprinted off to rejoin her family.
